It was an exceptional one because it had vast reserves of lithium - up to 1,000 times as much as other giant stars. ![]() However, about 40 years ago, astronomers discovered one group of stars. This was about 13.7 billion years ago. And then, the other elements were produced in copious amounts by stars since then, there has been very little increase in the amount of lithium in the universe since then. It was the only metal produced in the Big Bang that created the universe. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) Bangalore have discovered clues to the secret behind the high abundance of the element in some evolved stars. Lithium-rich evolved stars have been a mystery haunting scientists for nearly 40 years now and the puzzle is finally close to being solved.
